The Dalai Lama is the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism who leads by kindness and proselytizes peace. He was the head of state in exile of Tibet until he ceded power to a parliment of Tibetans in exile in 2001. He retired as the head of state to make way for a democratic government.
